It's September - Let's get back to our meetings!

Saturday, September 15, 2012......10:00 a.m. - Noon

Please note this change in the location this class will be held.  Because of meetings to be held at our regular home, our September meeting only will be held at the - FLOOD STREET CHAPEL - 85 SOUTH 400 EAST IN ST. GEORGE.

We have invited Dennis Weist to present this meeting.  Dennis is currently teaching classes at the St. George FamilySearch Library on 'Family Tree from FamilySearch.org'.   Family Tree will soon replace newfamilysearch.org.  The change is taking shape and it is time for everyone to start learning Tree.   At some time new.familysearch.org will be taken off the system.

Dennis has been teaching this class for several weeks and is very knowledgeable in the current program and what can be expected.  If you have already started working with Tree, or haven't looked at all, this presentation will be for you.

Saturday, October 20, 2012.....10:00a.m. - Noon

OUR OCTOBER, NOVEMBER & DECEMBER MEETINGS ARE EXPECTED TO BE HELD BACK AT THE EAST STAKE CENTER, OUR REGULAR MEETING LOCATION.

October is Family History Month and Kathy Blake's Christmas Family History demonstration will be our presentation.    Kathy has a variety of ways to prepare a Christmas gift using your personal family information.  Start in October and be prepared by Christmas!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday, November 17, 2012 - 10:00a.m. - Noon

Our November class will be presented by Max Turpin, and he will present two subjects.  Find-A-Grave and Drop-Box.

Both of these subjects are a great tool in doing our Family History.   Find-A-Grave continues to grow and having the option of contacting a Find-A-Grave volunteer in the area where your person has been buried can be very helpful.   If your person is not on the web site currently, a volunteer may be able to go out to the cemetery, find the grave site, and take pictures to share.  Drop Box is a way to store and share your files.   Documents, pictures, whatever you have on your computer.   And -we're told it's safe.   Come and learn how these two programs can work for you.

BUILDING A GENEALOGY TOOL BOX

Our May meeting..... Saturday, May 19, 2012

President Bob Kroff opened the meeting with a welcome to all members and visitors.  Bob then thanked all those who are participating in the 1940 Census Indexing.

For those who are not doing indexing, it's not to late.   Contact any board member for help starting, or go to the St. George Family History Center (in the temple parking lot) and help is available there.

President Kroff then introducted a visitor, Charles Clayton.  Mr. Clayton will be the Grand Marshall for the Thursday, September 27th Opening Cememony at the Santa Clara 2012 Swiss Days.  He was chosen for his donation to the Historical Society making possible for the Museum at the Santa Clara Town Hall.  Mr. Clayton also noted that the Coleville Restoration Group was involved in the dedication and Open House for the Josiah Stowell home and the Knight Farmhouse in Nineveh, New York, the Coleville area.  Mr. Clayton descends through the Samuel Knight family.

Todays Presenter was Lida Larkin.  Lida who lives in both St. George and Las Vegas is the mother of seven children and now enjoys her 20 grandchildren, with a couple of great-grandchildren thrown into the mix.  Lida is a Board Member of the SUFH&GGroup.

Since the age of 13 Lida has been involved in family history and genealogy research.  She has written three extensive Family Histories and is working on a fourth at the present time.  She is a Family History Consultant and enjoys helping others with their genealogy research.   She loves the FamilySearch site and other genealogy helps online, and has a free Family History Tips newsletter, sent occasionally.  You can receive by signing up on her website at       www.tipsforfamilyhistory.com

Lida's presentation Building a Genealogy Tool Box was very informative and followed a Power Point Demonstration with a handout.  (Contact any board member for this handout.)   The presentation specializes in creating a 'container' to hold your genealogy/family history documents and/or URL sites.

A Research ToolBox personalizes your own genealogy research.  You can make it geared to fit your own style and likes.  This handout is loosely based on Tom MacEntee's webinar.
                                  Thomas MacEntee's website - http://tinyurl.com/3ggggok

Objective:  To help you organize your bookmarks and links and be able to find your favorite research websites.  (Instead of hammers, nails and screwdrivers, you use websites.)
Containers:  Contents reside in a container.  You select the best one for you before adding content.
Select a Container:  You can change or upgrade containers at a later date.  Cindy's list is one of the most popular toolboxes that you can access and search..  You need to have your own and Lida's class outline provides the necessary information to create you own Toolbox.

Saturday, January 21, 2012 Monthly Meeting

SOUTHERN UTAH·FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY GROUP
Washington County PAF User Group

St. George East Stake Building

449 South 300 East, St. George, UT

Saturday, January 21, 2012

GREETERS: .....Helen Lenz, Marilyn Rohrer, and Sandra Bryant
Welcome: .....Vice-President Fran Lightner ---10:AM
Opening Prayer .....Russ Bateman
Welcome was extended to all members and to all our visitors.

Teaching Moment given by Fran about using a CD for journaling. Write about what is going on in your life, your feelings and emotions, not just the weather etc, especially any insights or spiritual moments that you have experienced. Write down about our family and then it is part of their history also. She also asked for help about using a Blog.

Then she introduced our presenters. Bob is a retired teacher/Administrator from the Toole School District. He taught and was the principal at Hurricane Middle School in the early 70’s and owned a grocery store in Springdale. While employed in the District office in Tooele Bob was a teacher trainer and traveled Utah and Idaho presenting skills in teaching. Bob and his wife Carol served a Mission at the ST George Family History Center, with a special interest in personal histories. Bob has served with our group for several years and is presently our President.

Joel his brother was born in SLC and raised in Tooele, Joel went to Southern California on an LDS mission and attended BYU following his mission. While going to BYU Joel spent the summer in Springdale working for his brother Robert. This is where Joel met and fell in love with his wife Marium. They are the parents of 5 wonderful boys. Joel and Marium currently reside in ST. George, Utah. Joel is active in the local toastmasters club, a public speaking forum, where he has achieved their highest achievement, that of a Distinguished Toastmaster.

Presenters: The Kroff Brothers “LIFE CHANGING MOMENTS”

Bob & Joel begin their Presentation with a recap of how they became aware of ‘ the box ‘ and how with Uncle Verl’s passing that some had gone into the home and had already taken some of the things that they thought were of more value than’ the box’ of notebooks , scrapbooks, newspaper & magazine articles and stuff. But when these two opened the box and took a peek, they knew they had the real treasure. They discovered through Uncle Verl’s journals of such that he was a man of intelligence rather than, as children, the ‘unintelligent hermit’ they had thought him to be.

So the point they wanted to bring out to us was…….You do not have to wait for your whole history to be completed to start to share your memories. They have done this by telling their story over and over the last couple of years. And now they have added to it the digital format with slides of all the things of interest to the story, also with even words and music and they published a small book of Uncle Verl. They have done a great job and have included some of their children in writing a special song for Verl.

Again they wanted to demonstrate to us you can put onto CD and then self-publish your work for a very fraction of the cost as to have someone do it for you. And it works great!! And they told us of some of the places to go and things needed to accomplish this. We all had a great time in remembrance of days past and learning how to move forward with what we have, Now! The point is Do Something!!

Russ Bateman package of paper clips, Ned G. a ream of paper and also Norene Walton a ream of paper.
